I know this is old news … but it still bugs me. Why do they have to go and do that? I know it must annoy them that there are all of us out there who haven’t paid them a dime in 2 or 3 years … but come on. We shelled out a chunk of change for that right. Its not like they were getting ripped off.
I hate monthly fees. When you start charging monthly fees … people start thinking about how much something is really worth to them. With that lifetime fee … you say “ouch” when you first pay for it … but then there isn’t any monthly “man … I can’t believe I’m paying $$$ a month for this.” Two years later and its paid for itself.
This seems to be a purely money decision on tivo’s part … which, ok, they are a business. They have to make money. But tivo got to be where they are because of their fanbase preaching for them. Tivo users are fanatical … and they want everyone to have a tivo. And everyone I have convinced to get a tivo … bought the lifetime subscription fee.
We gave a tivo to my parents for Christmas — with the lifetime service — and it was great to give it to them and be able to say – here you go. Plug it in and have fun. You never have to pay a dime for anything … just enjoy.
Now … you give it … maybe buy a year’s subscription and then tell them oh yeah and in a year — you’ll have to pay a fee if you want to keep it.
The only possible positive thing about them dropping the lifetime service option is that those of us who have tivos with lifetimes can make a lot of money on ebay. Of course then we’d have to buy a monthly fee tivo to replace it. Which stinks. So its a win/lose situation. I guess we’ll just have to make sure our tivos never die.

For only $249 – you can have access to your tivo (or regular television) from anywhere in the world. That’s right. You can watch that LOST episode on your tivo at home on your laptop in your hotel room in China.
Tivo isn’t required … but tivo people are the first ones who are going to latch on to this baby. Slingbox … clever name. Steve saw this a few months back on a business trip … and then last weekend we saw it live in CompUSA. Oh – and there are no fees. Very nifty.

I was logging onto my tivo account this morning … and thought some of their top 25 lists were interesting. As of 1/2/05 Desperate Housewives was the #1 tivo recording! Not surprising as the show is fantastic. The Top Actor Wishlist? Julia Roberts! Love her!
Top 25 Season Passes

CSI: Crime Scene Investigation*

It’s lucky that Steve and I are both such geeks and tivo lovers … because we both had the same idea this year for our Christmas present. We gave each other the Humax Tivo DVD-R. And we LOVE it.
It’s got all the normal cool Tivo features — plus with like 2 clicks you can burn any tv show or movie to DVD. It’s all built in. You pop the DVD into any computer or TV — and it even LOOKS like the tivo screen. Kinda nifty! And of course it eliminated the standalone DVD player from our entertainment unit — which also means one less remote. You view regular DVD’s from within the Tivo interface … it’s just another section for DVD’s.
And .. now that we finally have cable, you just hook the tivo up to a wireless network adapter and wala. No more phone line needed. Now the tivo’s can see each other on the network … and all is wonderful. We can watch stuff on the bedroom tivo from the living room tivo;
And now TIVO has finally released Tivo-To-Go … so we can dump old movies and tv series off onto our computer’s hard drive to save space (although now that we have the tivo DVD burner … that isn’t as big of an issue on the humax as it is for the series2 tivo in the bedroom).
I wonder how the copyright issues work with all this? I mean … we can literally burn anything we can record on our tivo onto DVD. I love it! :cloud9:

I was talking with a fellow Tivo-owner this morning about the newest breed of people that we are a part of. We’re totally up on all the latest news and tv shows. We never miss an episode of our favorite shows … thanks to Season Passes. We tivo stuff we think we might like … since it only takes a few minutes to quickly scan a program, we tivo lots of shows that we wouldn’t ordinarily watch. And most Tivo owners are also fairly technologically inclined, and therefore we’re up on the latest innovations in computers and electronics.
But ask us about that hilarious commercial you saw last night during
Nope – we don’t have a clue. We haven’t watched a commercial in almost two years … well – we watched a few at the Superbowl, but thats only because those are always good commercials. But other than those, we have no clue what you are talking about. Pop-culture references made to commercials are lost on us. We don’t see movie previews unless we purposefully tivo the Coming Attractions show on E!
And we aren’t complaining … because not knowing the latest commercial funny or overhyped movie preview is a small price to pay for watching
Speaking of new shows … we’re trying out Wonderfalls on Fox. It’s quirky, some bits are very Ally McBeal-esque …. there’s a new episode on tonight too. We’ll tivo it, watch it in 40 minutes, and then decide whether it’s earned a season pass or not …..
