Personalize Your Google

// September 26th, 2005 // No Comments » // tagged:

Nifty. You can personalize your Google homepage now. I've got mine setup to show my latest gmails, my search history, a few personal rss feeds, a newsfeed, and some other random fun stuff. I especially like the gmail and search history being right there. Very handy.

AD and Exchange Scripts

// June 27th, 2005 // No Comments » // tagged:

Anybody know of a script (VBScript preferably) out there that allows you to import an excel/text/csv file into Active Directory - and for each line item - have it create a user account in a specified OU, and create an exchange mailbox at the same time? I've been surfing the microsoft tech-net scripts - and found something to create the user accounts (though I haven't tried it yet) - but haven't seen anything yet that includes the automation of exchange mailbox creation. I don't know that there is an "import" script out there - but if I had the syntax to run the script - I can really easily edit my file for the script and wala (that's what I was going to do with the user account creation only script ... but thought I would see if anybody out there knew of a more full-featured script.) I'm trying to find a way to get out of creating 200 user/exchange accounts by hand. :arg:

I finished a huge web project recently ... and Silver Strawberry is purchasing it's very first mac. We have needed one for a while as a "testing facility" - and when I saw a pretty good rebate on Amazon recently - I jumped on the deal. I wanted a small, light laptop (since my dell laptop weighs a whopping 7.4 lbs!) -- and the 12.1" powerbook fits the bill. Winging it's way towards Nashville is the newest member of our family ... an Apple PowerBook Notebook 12.1", 1.5 GHz PowerPC G4, 512 MB RAM, 80 GB Hard Drive, SuperDrive, Bluetooth, Airport

Pretty Little Wacom

// May 16th, 2005 // No Comments » // tagged:

My Pretty WacomThere was a sale (rebate) on Wacom tablets at COMPUSA this weekend -- and since I've wanted one ever since I found out about them -- we dropped by yesterday afternoon and picked one up. :cool: I got the white version - the mouse is pearlescent white and just looks beautiful on my desk. I hooked it up and immediately fired up Illustrator to test it out. I was amused for atleast 15 minutes just writing my name. Then I opened up a graphics project I've been working on recently -- one where I wanted the text to hug the outline of an object I'd drawn. I'd been trying to get the text just right for a while. With my nifty little Wacom pen - I just drew the exact path I wanted the text to follow - and wala! - the graphic looks exactly like what I wanted. I got the small version -- which suits my needs just fine. To get your very own -- for only $69 -- go to CompUSA. I love technology like this. The wacom idea is something so simple -- but it gives so much flexibility. :bigthumb:

Macromedia + Adobe = Not Sure Yet

// April 18th, 2005 // No Comments » // tagged:

Hmmm ... have you heard the news? Adobe and Macromedia are merging (or will as soon as its voted on - which they must be pretty certain it will get approved as they're announcing it). What will this mean? I use Dreamweaver, Flash, Photoshop and Illustrator. Will these products change significantly now that their creators are joining forces? Is this a good thing? I'm going to have to read up on this and see what the future holds for some of my very favorite software. Surely this is a good thing? I mean - hopefully Macromedia will dump Fireworks - its' pitiful excuse of a graphics program - and make photoshop its' native graphic editor. And maybe this means cheaper software? Cheaper in the sense of you only have to buy one suite - the Macrodobe (thats what I'm going to start calling it) suite. Instead of Adobe CS and Studio. I think its got to be a good thing. When designing a site in Dreamweaver - or working in flash - it's got to be a good thing that files are cross-compatible in photoshop and illustrator. I can so see why they would want to merge. They both have some great products. Flash and Illustrator are like distant cousins ... with their vectorness and wonderfulness. You can't say enough about Photoshop and Dreamweaver. I could wax poetic about those all day long. How do I love thee? Let me count the ways ...

Smarterchild

What a trip. If you have AIM - add "smarterchild" as a buddy. Then send an instant message saying "hey" or whatever. It's an IM-bot. You can get movie showtimes, definitions, have really bizarre conversations ... It's just a novelty thing - but too cute. I've been asking mine bizarro questions this morning. Have fun ;) (you can find more info about it here)

Speed, Blessed Speed

Comcast was turned on yesterday afternoon! We're getting download speeds over 3Mbps ... yesssssssss! Can I just say that when you've been on 24K for 18 months - you REALLY appreciate 3Mbps. I want to bake it a cake and throw it a party. It deserves it!! Anybody want two months free of Vonage? They're running a great referral discount now! Shoot me an email :)

Vonage v. Bellsouth

// November 29th, 2004 // 5 Comments » // tagged:

Anyone other than Patrick using Vonage for their phone service? We're going to be switching from Bellsouth to Vonage as soon as our Comcast connection is turned on. It's an amazing service ... Voice-Over-IP phone service! Here's a comparison of our current bill ... and what our new bill will be. Bellsouth .... $60 » Complete Choice Plan - $29 (Call Waiting, Caller ID, 3-Way Calling, Call-Forwarding) » Federal Universal Service Charge - $.61 » Mileage - Zone - $1.00 » Emergency 911 Service - $1.15 » FCC Authorized Charge for Network Access - $6.50 » Equipment Maintenance Plan - $4.75 » Inside Wire Maintenance Service Plan - $5.50 » Credit for subscribing to above ($2.80) » Federal Excise Tax - $1.11 » State/Local TN Tax - $3.55 » And let's not forget our long-distance carrier. Our AT&T monthly bill is approximately $9. (We have to have a long-distance carrier in order to call Steve's family in England; We call my family on our cell phones - that have unlimited long distance calls included) » So - our monthly phone services bill is always at least $60 a month (depending on how many times we call England!). Vonage .... $22 » Basic 500 Plan - $14.99 (Voicemail Plus, Caller ID with Name, Call Waiting, Call Forwarding, 3-Way Calling, In-Network Calling, Traveling with Vonage, Area Code Selection, Call Transfer, Click-2-Call, Call Return (*69), Caller ID Block (*67), Repeat Dialing, International Call Block, Ring Lists, Call Hunt; Includes 500 anytime minutes; each minute after that is 3.9 cents a minute;) » Federal Excise Tax - $.45 » Regulatory Recovery Fee - $1.50 » International Calling Rate to England - 3 cents a minute » We're adding another feature to our vonage account called a Virtual Number. Basically - we'll have ANOTHER phone number, in my parents/grandparents/siblings area code. So they can call us for free. And that's only another $5 a month. Which brings our total Vonage phone bill up to a whopping $22. That's a $38 savings ... and you're getting even more features. (Vonage will EMAIL your voicemails to you ... you can have your phone forwarded to another number if you're going out of town ... I can call other vonage customers for free ... you can use vonage on your computer or laptop ... and much much more!) I love Vonage. If you've got broadband internet connection, you should definitely CHECK IT OUT.

It’s finally here!

Back in July, I blogged a dirty little secret. My husband and I have been shamefully surfing the web at a shocking ... 24K. (Read more about that scandal here!) :cloud9: On Saturday, our fantasies of high speed internet access finally came to fruition. A Comcast sales rep showed up on our front porch!! Comcast is here!After doing the happy dance with him :dance: - we got down to business. We're signed up for installation sometime during the first of December. Since our house is already wired - and all we need is for them to run the cable into our attic - we get higher priority! Woohoo! Bring on the high-speed internet and digital cable. Good bye Satellite and 24K dialup! :bounce: Our Satellite TV reception has never been great - our house is in the woods, with really tall trees - and even with the satellite on the highest part of the roof, it still doesn't get good reception. So we're excited about switching our TV over the cable as well. (The only negative about switching over to cable is losing the dual-tuner tivo. I loved that!!!) We're still sorting out our tivo options though. Currently, we have the dual-tuner DirecTV tivo in the living room and a Series 2 Tivo and separate receiver in our bedroom. We're thinking of getting the new Humax DVD-R/RW Tivo to replace the DirecTV tivo. It's a bit pricey ... but the features are awesome. Maybe it will be a joint anniversary (4 years on December 2) and Christmas gift to each other. We've been on 24K dialup for almost two years now. I'm used to going down and watching tv for an hour while I upload a few files. I can't wait to be able to get work done more quickly ... surf more quickly ... do everything more quickly! (And we can finally use the tv tuner on our computer that we used back at our comcast-enabled apartment 2 years ago!)) :dance:
