A Book Meme

Nabbed from Connielane

1)Total number of books I've owned?

Hmmm ... I have no idea. Hundreds. We have lots of bookcases in our house - and they all have books in them.

2) The last book I bought?

The Time Traveler's Wife by Audrey Niffenegger
[read my review]

3) The last book I read?

The Evening Class by Maeve Binchy
[review to come]

4) Five books that mean a lot to me: (in no particular order)

Pride & Prejudice by Jane Austen
How can you not love this book? "In vain I have struggled. It will not do. My feelings will not be repressed. You must allow me to tell you how ardently I admire and love you."

1984 by George Orwell
I read this for the first time in tenth grade ... and was completely fascinated by it. Orwell's story of Big Brother, the constant writing and rewriting history, doublethink, newspeak - every time I read it I'm impressed by the originality (when it was written anyway) of this book. If you didn't have this as required reading in high school -- it's definitely worth it.

Outlander series by Diana Gabaldon
I've read this entire series at least 5 times - and each time I find something new in them. Gabaldon is an amazingly talented writer who tenaciously researches history in an effort to keep her stories firmly rooted in actual historical events. Never before have I read a fictional book and learned so much real history. I recommend her books to anyone looking for a new author to get interested in. You won't be disappointed.

Passion and Purity by Elisabeth Elliot
I read this book in college. Elisabeth and Jim's five year courtship is a story of love, courage, patience ... oh my the patience! I still have this book and it's full of underlined bits, highlighted sections - I found so much in this book that spoke to me. I'm married now and still this book means a lot to me.

Lucky by Alice Sebold
After hearing about this book from practically every woman I know - I picked it up while at Barnes and Noble a few years ago. I read half of it while I was still in the bookstore. It's the class triumph over tragedy story -- but it's so well written it allows you to somewhat feel what she went through after her rape. Another book I recommend to everyone.

Do you back up your blog? How often? (Do you export your entries from MT into text files?)

Do you back up your MySQL (or other backend) database frequently?

Have you ever needed your backup?

If you didn't have a backup, and lost everything .... would you start over or just consider it a sign to stop blogging?

Do you backup your home computers? How often?

What You Didn't Know

| | Comments (1)

:sevenonsunday: Seven things people might not know about you ...

1. I play the piano and flute. I'm a somewhat accomplished classical pianist, but haven't played anywhere other than home for several years. I was in band all through school, and enjoyed having the smallest instrument in the marching band -- the piccolo!

2. My first name, Lacy, is my mother's maiden name. My middle name, Marie, is also my mom's, grandmother's, great-grandmothers and so-on's middle name. Anyone want to guess what my first daughter's middle name will be? I love it that my parents made my name be special and mean something in our family.

3. I talk in my sleep when I'm really tired. Sometimes I even sing. (My husband usually informs me the next day of my my nighttime repertoire :sing: )

4. I originally met my husband online! We developed a strong friendship and exchanged emails and letters for almost four years before we met in person. Two years later I walked down the aisle and married him - my best friend and soulmate :heartbeat:

5. I had an ovarian cyst the size of an apple removed from my left ovary almost two years ago. (Wow. 2 years. Time really flies -- I can't believe it's been that long!)

6. Every day I wear my wedding rings on my left hand, a sapphire ring my grandmothers gave me for graduation on my right hand, a ruby pendant necklace from Steve, my watch and two earrings in each ear (usually a gold hoop in the first, and little diamonds in the second.)

7. I was born 4 minutes after my mother arrived at the hospital. My dad didn't even make it up from the parking garage in time for my arrival! My parents have always said I was in a hurry then, and I haven't stopped since :bounce:

September Wednesday's Child

| | Comments (3)

Taking my cue from Melissa, here is a horoscope meme. You pick your birth month, and then cross out everything that's not applicable. (All of the months are in the extended entry.)

September:

Suave and compromising. Careful, cautious and organized. Likes to point out people's mistakes. Likes to criticize. Stubborn. Quiet but able to talk well. Calm and cool. Kind and sympathetic. Concerned and detailed. Loyal but not always honest. Does work well. Very confident. Sensitive. Thinking generous. Good memory. Clever and knowledgeable. Loves to look for information. Must control oneself when criticizing. Able to motivate oneself. Understanding. Fun to be around. Secretive. Loves sports (well I do like hockey ....), leisure and traveling. Hardly shows emotions. Tends to bottle up feelings. Very choosy, especially in relationships. Systematic.
