Tivo Everywhere with Slingbox

// September 30th, 2005 // 1 Comment » // tagged: >

For only $249 - you can have access to your tivo (or regular television) from anywhere in the world. That's right. You can watch that LOST episode on your tivo at home on your laptop in your hotel room in China. slingboxTivo isn't required ... but tivo people are the first ones who are going to latch on to this baby. Slingbox ... clever name. Steve saw this a few months back on a business trip ... and then last weekend we saw it live in CompUSA. Oh - and there are no fees. Very nifty. I wish they would come up with a way for my tivo to link with other tivos though. So if I was at my brothers house -- I could pull up a program on my tivo through his tivo. OR even cooler - I could just send him a program from my tivo. Or send him an "invitation" to record something I think he'll like. At least we have the DVD-burning tivo ... so I can burn programs to my hearts content. I :heartbeat: tivo.

Personalize Your Google

Nifty. You can personalize your Google homepage now. I've got mine setup to show my latest gmails, my search history, a few personal rss feeds, a newsfeed, and some other random fun stuff. I especially like the gmail and search history being right there. Very handy.

Extreme Makeover – Home Edition: The Best Show on Television

// September 25th, 2005 // 2 Comments » // tagged:

Season premiere of Extreme Makeover - Home Edition was tonight. I'm sure you guys were watching just like us. Last season it was a weekly ritual - Steve and I would sit on the couch and watch EMHE with tears in both our eyes. I LOVE this show. A great season opener with the Rodriguez family. If only the rest of the TV world would realize that this show - a show that builds people up and does something good - is what they should be striving for. I don't care anything about watching a bunch of greedy, self-absorbed people competing to survive on an island somewhere, or silly people eating bugs for fear factor, or any of the other completely useless reality shows. There's enough negative stuff going on in the world ... why not show a little light? Something good ... a good-hearted cry once a week is good for everyone. And it makes you want to go out and do something nice for someone else. That's always a good thing. So there we have it ... Extreme Makeover - Home Edition: The Best Show on Television. ;)

I’m actually looking forward to a Monday?

I'm actually looking forward to Monday this week. Why? I'm attending an Adobe Photoshop conference. :bounce: Wheee!!! I booked it several months ago and am really looking forward to it. We have a large-group opening session tomorrow morning - and then there are 10 small-group sessions offered the rest of the day - and you pick five to attend. I like that - basically you can choose what you want to learn more about, and leave out the sessions that you don't really need. I hope I come away from the day with a few new skills - and more than few new bits of knowledge. I love learning new things! There's another Photoshop conference here in November - and pending how this one goes, I might go to it. (Side note ... one of the great things about owning your own business is that conferences like this one are tax-write-offs. It's educational!) I sent in a request for Illustrator conferences ... which would be awesome. I could really use some hands-on training to improve my teeny Illustrator skillset. ;) So tomorrow is Monday - and I'm all YEAHHHH!!! It's a nice feeling ;)

September 21, 1977 12:55 PM

:propeller: At 12:44 PM on September 21, 1977 my mother was checked in by my frantic father to Bradley Memorial Hospital. I was born at 12:55 PM. :bday: According to my mom, they stopped on the way to the hospital at one of her friends house to drop off my brother - and it's lucky I wasn't born on their front porch! As my father said at lunch today - I was in a hurry then - and I have been ever since. Twenty Eight! That doesn't seem as old now as it did when I was a teenager ;)

My husband and I are dating

// September 19th, 2005 // 2 Comments » // tagged: >

At least that's what it feels like anyway. We talk to each other on the phone every night - "Whaddya do today?", "I love you", "I miss you", "See you on Friday" -- and we see each other a lot on the weekends. Since May, Steve has been out of town with work every single week except two. :yell: So for almost five months - we've seen each other on weekends - and maximum one day during the week. He travels all over the U.S. to the hospitals HCA owns - some they already own, some they are getting ready to take over - and "assimilates" them into the massive HCA network (computer network, that is). Resistance is Futile is his teams motto, I think. Many times, a team from HCA shows up en masse at a hospital they are getting ready to take over and each team goes to its area to prepare them for the changes. Finance, HR, Tech - everyone gets attention ;) Other times, they go individually to the hospitals and spend a week getting their network moved over to HCA. They have MAJOR security protocols - and so each hospital is required to upgrade their network hardware (firewalls, routers, etc) to HCA's standard before they are allowed to connect to the network. Steve goes in and determines what they need to upgrade - and then comes back a few weeks later and gets them all hooked up. (I'm sure he'd love how I just simplified his job ... lol) Sometimes its a pleasant thing - hospitals love getting the latest and greatest technologies and programs for their physicians - and sometimes it's less pleasant. Anyway -- all that to say -- Steve's been on the road for five months now. It stinks. :( We've done this already. We long distance dated before we were married for a year and a half. It was hard then and we weren't even married yet. I remember hating airports when we were dating - they were a place of goodbyes. Being married - and yet spending most of our time apart - is not fun. He's tired - and who wouldn't be? I'm tired - and get a bit lonely sometimes. We live out in the country - in a house that we both love - but I loved it more when my husband was home with me out in the country every day - when we were both doing the driving to and from the city. I miss our time together. Talking on the phone just isn't the same - and sleeping alone got old about 4 3/4 months ago. The only upside to this is that we get to keep all the airmiles and points for hotels, cars, etc. That counts for something, right? (at least that's what we tell ourselves ... lol) Now all we have to do is figure out when we can go on vacation ... together. :headache: Wednesday is my birthday ... and guess where Steve is? Arizona. All week. Yeah - I'm an adult - birthdays aren't a huge huge deal - but I still wish he was here for it. :bday: So, yeah - it feels like I'm dating my husband. We talk on the phone every night - and see each other on weekends. I see some light at the end of the tunnel - supposedly the traveling is going to slow down week after next. I'll believe it when I see my husband for more than one day a week.

A Bloggers Lunch

// September 15th, 2005 // 1 Comment » // tagged:

Had lunch with four Nashville bloggers today ... Katherine, Pam, Patrick, and Lydia. Thankfully I can continue to be lazy (thanks Katherine) and not write my own entry about it - because Katherine and Pam both blogged about it already! Be sure to check out the plate. It's freaky. :whoa:

Enough Already

// September 13th, 2005 // 4 Comments » // tagged: > >

I've turned off my newsreader this week. I was talking to a fellow blogger last week - and we agreed that it seems like every body can't stop talking about Katrina and who's to blame for the aftermath. People are either ranting about it - or linking to everyone elses rants. Other than my entry about HCA's evacuation efforts (which was a POSITIVE post), and displaying a Red Cross Donation link, I haven't felt the need to blog on the situation. What could I possibly say that would do anything for those people? But some people just can't seem to keep away from their keyboards. Enough already. Instead of spending an hour writing a blog entry about how Bush, Brown, FEMA, black people, white people, etc are to blame for the suffering in the gulf -- get up and actually do something for the people. Drop off clothes and toiletries at the local collection point - donate some money. Clean out all the extra stuff from your house -- everyone's got stuff they can give. Blogging about it, rehashing every single thing that has happened, casting blame this way and that ... that does absolutely NOTHING for those people.

Reboot in Progress

// September 8th, 2005 // 7 Comments » // tagged:

I'm "rebooting" this site this week - implementing a new design, condensing my stylesheets and reworking some of the code - so some things might be a little wonky (yes that's a technical term). It's been a while since my last redesign -- and this one is definitely the darkest I've ever gone. I've been having fun with Photoshop CS2. If you haven't upgraded ... it is SO worth it. GREAT upgrade. :thumbsup: (And the Illustrator upgrade is worth it's weight in gold. It's FANTASTIC. Just go for the whole suite. Great investment.) So back to the reboot - it's dark and grungy - but I like it. It's my first departure from an 800x600 friendly design. I am so tired of the huge expanse of wasted space. If you have your screen set at that resolution, you're going to horizontal scroll. While I would never design a site for a client that isn't 800x600 friendly (because the average computer user uses the resolution their computers came out of the box set at, and until recently everything shipped with 800x600 native) - my stats for THIS site show that 99.9% of my traffic views this site on at least 1024x768 (and then there are people like me - my screen resolution is 1280x960!) If you're still at 800x600 ... what is wrong with you? Don't you know how many pixels you're missing??? :tongue: So - it's Silverberry Rebooted, Bigger and Darker (with a little more cowbell).
