MacGyver’s Excellent Adventure

// May 26th, 2005 // No Comments » // tagged: > >

We spent this past weekend working at my parents old house (my childhood home). They have already moved into their new neighborhood (less than two miles down the road!!) and are going to rent the old house once they get everything cleaned out and spruced up. Steve and I painted a few rooms and helped mom with a garage sale. When we headed back over to the new house — we were bringing over some outdoor furniture. MacGyver always travels to Cleveland with us — so he was in the backyard at the new house. Someone had the bright idea of putting him inside the fence around the pool while we were moving the outdoor furniture into the backyard. The pool was still covered — but it had been raining all week and the cover had little ponds of green, gooey, yucky leaf filled water all over it. We figured he would just run around a bit or sit at the gate and wait til we were finished unloading furniture. Mac SwimmingNot our dog. Nope. MacGyver never does what you expect him to do. MacGyver, the dog who runs to the back of our property when the water hose is brought out (not even turned on yet!) — dove right into the yucky ponds on top the pool cover. He’s diving in — putting his head under the water — like he’s looking for something — and then he crawls out and runs at mach4 around the pool. It was like a dog on crack. He’s covered in green goo and we’re all laughing so hard — and he jumps in again. We’re worried the pool cover will collapse around him — so we try to get him out and he gets out only to jump right back in. My brother said he’s [MacGyver] probably not had that much fun (or been that cool) in a long time! It was soooo funny! We finally managed to get him out — and got him out of the fenced pool area — and he just runs and runs and runs around the backyard. That green gooey water energized him!! Thankfully I had my camera out there - to get pictures of Sarah, of course - so we were able to capture a few of the pool-cover swimming moments!!! Click here for pictures!

My name isn’t Michael Vaughn

Great lines .... Jack - "I'm trying to have more fun" Irina - "Ever since you were eleven, there's something I've wanted to do... " Vaughn - "My name isn't Michael Vaughn." Irina - "take me to my sister" Great moments ... Irina shooting Elena and then saying "cut the blue wire". The Jack/Irina kiss. Every scene between them. Irina's prescence. Period. The last 2 seconds. Thank goodness for tivo. Rewound that and watched it several times. Sloane shooting Nadia. Marshall and Weiss back in the states. Some hilarious lines there. Sydney talking to Sloane at the end -- telling him she actually thinks he was trying to do the right thing.

Alias, Lost & Gilmore Girls

Thoughts on the latest episodes of Alias, Lost and Gilmore Girls in the extended session. Spoilers. Alias Is Nadia Jack's daughter? Is that what Irina was hinting at ??? "Ask me on the beach?" Wheee! I still think it must be weird for Vartan and Garner to do those types of scenes together considering their history. (I wonder if they weren't going to have them get married on the show and then Garner found out she was pregnant?) Interesting flashbacks with Nadia and Sloane getting the sphere. Still won't miss her next season. Is Sloane bad? I'm waffling. He was shocked when Elena shot Dixon - and before she shot him I thought he was trying to tell Dixon that he was trying to fix things somehow ... to trust him to do that. (not likely that Dixon would ever trust Sloane ... ) Dixon and Chase. Cool. She could tone down the constant 'pursing her lips and eyebrows raised' looks though. Relax woman. Lena Olin. So enjoyed her performance. Wonder whats going to happen there for next season? Lost Don't like Sawyer much - but he had a few good moments tonight. Looking for Kate to say goodbye. Choosing to tell Jack about meeting his father. Wanting to prove himself to Michael and Jin - cutting the mast. Walt giving his dog to Shannon. Such a sweet scene. Walt is still freaking me out though. Sun and Jin's "reunion" - I half expected her to run into the ocean and yell that she loves him when he was floating away on the boat. But I guess that understated watching each other was cool too ;) Hmm -- so "the others" came and took the french ladies baby. What is it with babies? You know thats what Claire was thinking. Gilmore Girls Rory is acting like such a spoiled brat. It really doesn't seem like her to just take what Huntzburger said as absolute truth and give up on her journalism dream. It seems very -- out of character. Not impressed that Richard and Emily are "harboring" her and encouraging her bad decision to drop out of Yale. Blah. Loralei and Luke. Sigh. When he's ranting in the diner at the end and she's just watching him -- I knew then she was going to be the one who proposed. I hope he can still get that house .... Lane's band! I love that Mrs. Kim is going to be their manager. How funny was that!! Can't believe Loralei didn't go more ballistic over the whole committing a felony thing. Man TV is going to be really boring in a week or two. Everything's all finished and we'll be in re-run purgatory.

A Book Meme

Nabbed from Connielane 1)Total number of books I've owned? Hmmm ... I have no idea. Hundreds. We have lots of bookcases in our house - and they all have books in them. 2) The last book I bought? The Time Traveler's Wife by Audrey Niffenegger [read my review] 3) The last book I read? The Evening Class by Maeve Binchy [review to come] 4) Five books that mean a lot to me: (in no particular order) Pride & Prejudice by Jane Austen How can you not love this book? "In vain I have struggled. It will not do. My feelings will not be repressed. You must allow me to tell you how ardently I admire and love you." 1984 by George Orwell I read this for the first time in tenth grade ... and was completely fascinated by it. Orwell's story of Big Brother, the constant writing and rewriting history, doublethink, newspeak - every time I read it I'm impressed by the originality (when it was written anyway) of this book. If you didn't have this as required reading in high school -- it's definitely worth it. Outlander series by Diana Gabaldon I've read this entire series at least 5 times - and each time I find something new in them. Gabaldon is an amazingly talented writer who tenaciously researches history in an effort to keep her stories firmly rooted in actual historical events. Never before have I read a fictional book and learned so much real history. I recommend her books to anyone looking for a new author to get interested in. You won't be disappointed. Passion and Purity by Elisabeth Elliot I read this book in college. Elisabeth and Jim's five year courtship is a story of love, courage, patience ... oh my the patience! I still have this book and it's full of underlined bits, highlighted sections - I found so much in this book that spoke to me. I'm married now and still this book means a lot to me. Lucky by Alice Sebold After hearing about this book from practically every woman I know - I picked it up while at Barnes and Noble a few years ago. I read half of it while I was still in the bookstore. It's the class triumph over tragedy story -- but it's so well written it allows you to somewhat feel what she went through after her rape. Another book I recommend to everyone.

Pretty Little Wacom

My Pretty WacomThere was a sale (rebate) on Wacom tablets at COMPUSA this weekend -- and since I've wanted one ever since I found out about them -- we dropped by yesterday afternoon and picked one up. :cool: I got the white version - the mouse is pearlescent white and just looks beautiful on my desk. I hooked it up and immediately fired up Illustrator to test it out. I was amused for atleast 15 minutes just writing my name. Then I opened up a graphics project I've been working on recently -- one where I wanted the text to hug the outline of an object I'd drawn. I'd been trying to get the text just right for a while. With my nifty little Wacom pen - I just drew the exact path I wanted the text to follow - and wala! - the graphic looks exactly like what I wanted. I got the small version -- which suits my needs just fine. To get your very own -- for only $69 -- go to CompUSA. I love technology like this. The wacom idea is something so simple -- but it gives so much flexibility. :bigthumb:

Who is at Veronica Mars’ door?

// May 11th, 2005 // 11 Comments » // tagged:

Last night was the season finale. We finally learn the truth behind all the mysteries this season. :pi: If you haven't watched it yet, don't read the extended entry. It'll ruin your viewing pleasure of the finale. Thoughts: - We all knew as soon as the Kanes told Duncan that he killed Lilly -- that he didn't. It was pretty obvious that he found Lilly - and his parents just assumed he had a "fit" and killed her and they covered it up. He was in shock from finding his sister -- and had blocked the memory. - I didn't believe at any time that Logan killed her. But I did figure last week that the cameras Veronica found were going to come in handy eventually. - So, here's what I think went down between Weevil and Logan. Right before their meetup on the bridge - we see Veronica trying to reach Logan on his cell phone and she doesn't get him. I think she then called Weevil to let him know what was going down -- and asked him to find Logan. They're showing it on the screen like Weevil and his gang are going to torture him or something -- but I think it's just a season finale cliffhanger thing. Maybe I'm dreaming ... - And I don't think it's Duncan at V's door. He wasn't thrilled when he saw her when his dad and Aaron Echolls were getting arrested. He's still got some issues there. - I'm waffling between it being Logan or Wallace at the door. Part of me thinks its probably Wallace -- she needs a friend right then. And of course it can only be Logan if the above scenario between him and Weevil is true. Otherwise Logan is lying bleeding and broken under the bridge. Not a happy thought. - When Keith was in the conference room with the Kanes and they said V had to sign away rights to the Kane fortune, I knew then that the results of the paternity test were in and Keith was her father. What a great scene where V signs the papers without a second thought; great acting on both their parts. Sweeeet! I'm so glad she's actually his daughter. - Lianne. Ugh. What a total loser!!!! And I couldn't BELIEVE she stole the $50,000 check! She already wasted V's college money -- and now she takes away this too! - Lily and V at the end on the floats; Lily was a bit cryptic. Need to watch that again. - Aaron Echolls. Good choice for the murderer. Someone we didn't really suspect -- but so obvious looking back. What a creepy scary ... seeing his face in the rear view mirror; when he threw the lighter to ignite the gas -- ugh. - Left to wonder: the letter from Logan to Lilly? the secret message pen that Weevil stole from Lilly's room? why did Weidman run Lianne out of town? Good season finale. So glad this got renewed and given a chance! Click to read a great review at Newsday.com

Love: Husband vs. Children

// May 7th, 2005 // 2 Comments » // tagged: >

About two weeks ago there was an episode on Oprah with author Ayelet Waldman. She had recently written an article in which she boldly claimed, "I love my husband more than I love my children". I think she could have worded it differently - becuase she was saying that her relationship with her husband was the PRIMARY relationship in her home. The relationship with their CHILDREN was the secondary relationship. She says on the show "I am IN love with my husband. I love my children. Which is how it should be." Evidently women everywhere were outraged by this concept. Oprah showed a few brief clips from some women in the audience who blasted Ayelet -- how dare she put her husband before her children? What a horrible mother she must be ... But I - and Oprah - and a guy from the National Fatherhood Initiative and a few of the women on the show - pretty much agreed with everything Ayelet said. No, I don't have children yet ... but I remember something I heard my pastor say when I was a teenager ... (it was a long time ago - so I'm paraphrasing):
The most important thing a husband and wife can do for their children - other than raising them to love the Lord, obviously, - is to put each other first. To love each other. If a husband and wife put each other first - and their relationship first - it can only mean good things for their children. How can it be bad for chidlren to see their parents in love? To see their parents enjoying each other. To see their parents in a healthy, loving, devoted relationship.
And I remember as a teenager thinking - yeah. I always thought it was cool when my parents would hold hands; neat that they went on trips together, just the two of them; Children need to see that in their parents relationship. How do we think children figure out what they want in a relationship later on in life? One woman on the Oprah show said she watches Wheel of Fortune while she and her husband had sex. She said she was "fulfilling his needs" and that he was fine with that. And she was one of the ones going after Ayelet -- but sorry -- anybody who includes Pat Sajack and Vanna in their marriage just doesn't have anything to say that I need to hear. I'm sure her children have a great [insert sarcasm] view on what a marriage and home should be like. Then Oprah talked to several husbands -- who said that after their children were born -- their wives pretty much lost interest in them. Their total focus was on the children - from morning til night. Yes I can't even imagine how exhausting having children is. Can't even imagine. Nope - still can't imagine. But -- surely there is still part of you that is in love with your husband? Enjoys spending time with him. I can't imagine that just disappears ?? Several women went on to say that they figured they would have more time for their husbands when their children got older. The problem with that is that by the time the kids are older -- your husband doesn't even know you anymore. The "disconnect" has already happened. Oprah said that divorces after kids leave for college are alarmingly high these days. Once the kids are gone - nothing there anymore. The relationship died when the kids were in preschool. And I loved what one other author on the show said about parents who make their children the center of their universe ... and then those children become adults ... "And, you know, what kind of a person wants to have a relationship with somebody who's been raised to believe that they are the center of the world?" Haha! I laughed out loud at that one. So true!!! Another good quote was from Roland from the National Fatherhood Initiative -- "Strong marriages are like strong muscles. If you don't exercise them, they atrophy." He said this in response to the waiting til the kids are older philosophy of some of the moms in the audience ... I found that episode really thought-provoking ... anyone else see it? Thoughts on the topic in general? The page on Oprah.com about that episode can be found here

Life slows down a bit

Good interview with Mena Trott of Movable Type - great quote "People did this. People kept journals all through history and it's important. As soon as you stop, keeping track of what you do, things go by too quickly. This is one of the things we like doing. I should write a post about it. Life slows down by posting everyday." And that's why we blog, people. Because Life slows down a bit if you post something about your day.

Ohhh nifty new amazon navigation. I like the rounded corners and gradients -- and the "view all 31 categories" layer that becomes visible when you move your mouse over it.
