We’ve Always Done It That Way

// January 21st, 2005 // 1 Comment » // tagged:

The US standard railroad gauge (distance between the rails) is 4 feet, 8.5 inches. That's an exceedingly odd number. Why was that gauge used? Because that's the way they built them in England, and English expatriates built the US railroads. Why did the English build them like that? Because the first rail lines were built by the same people who built the pre-railroad tramways, and that's the gauge they used. Why did "they" use that gauge then? Because the people who built the tramways used the same jigs and tools that they used for building wagons, which used that wheel spacing. Why did the wagons have that particular odd wheel spacing? If they tried to use any other spacing, the wagon wheels would break on some of the old, long distance roads in England, because that's the spacing of the wheel ruts. So who built those old rutted roads? Imperial Rome built the first long distance roads in Europe(and England) for their legions. The roads have been used ever since. And the ruts in the roads? Roman war chariots formed the initial ruts, which everyone else had to match for fear of destroying their wagon wheels. Since the chariots were made for Imperial Rome, they were all alike in the matter of wheel spacing. The United States standard railroad gauge of 4 feet, 8.5 inches is derived from the original specifications for an Imperial Roman war chariot. And bureaucracies live forever. So the next time you are handed a spec and told we have always done it that way and wonder what horse's ass came up with that, you may be exactly right, because the Imperial Roman war chariots were made just wide enough to accommodate the back ends of two war horses. Now the twist to the story... When you see a Space Shuttle sitting on its launch pad, there are two big booster rockets attached to the sides of the main fuel tank. These are solid rocket boosters, or SRBs. The SRBs are made by Thiokol at their factory in Utah. The engineers who designed the SRBs would have preferred to make them a bit fatter, but the SRBs had to be shipped by train from the factory to the launch site. The railroad line from the factory happens to run through a tunnel in the mountains. The SRBs had to fit through that tunnel. The tunnel is slightly wider than the railroad track, and the railroad track, as you now know, is about as wide as two horses' behinds. So, a major Space Shuttle design feature of what is arguably the world's most advanced transportation system was determined over two thousand years ago by the width of a horse's ass. And I'll bet you thought being a horse's ass wasn't important??

Exchange Mailing Lists

// January 18th, 2005 // No Comments » // tagged:

Anyone know if there is an add-on to Exchange to manage external mailing lists? (i.e. when you send am email to news@domain.com - it sends an email to 125 different external email addresses on the mailing list; the email addresses are all outside of your exchange/active directory membership; need subscribe/unsubscribe pages) There has to be a way ... I've done a few searches and links are broken on the add-on's that I actually found. Could we write a script that would basically check an external database for email addresses ... hmmm ... there HAS to be a way. Everyone has mailing lists these days - and you know a lot of them are running Exchange.

Alias Rides Again

Best line of the night: Marshall: "er ... Sloane is here" Sydney: "we know" How many people actually thought Sydney was getting transferred to the mailroom? I mean ... seriously? She's their best agent. We knew it was a setup for something ... I was just waiting for a Credit Dauphine type location to show up next. In the subway is cool though ... Great scene when Syd walks around the corner and the camera pans from Dixon ... to Jack ... to Vaughn. And then of course ... we see Sloane. This brings us back to what made this show great in the beginning. A secret organization ... (yeah yeah the CIA is secretive ... but it's not black-ops-meets-in-the-subway secret). I think the writers did a switcharoo on what the big secret was on the top-secret papers. Last season ... it totally seemed like it had something to do with Sydney's childhood. Like Jack signed off on some experimental project to do with her. But now ... did they rewrite it to just get rid of Irina for forever since Lena Olin wouldn't come back? Who knows. It's just hard to believe that Irina went from imming with Jack in his car and doing things to HELP Sydney to suddenly putting a contract out on her life. Oh well ... maybe we'll learn more later. I was almost bouncing up and down last night watching this. It's my favorite show ... and it's back. And there will be a new episode EVERY SINGLE WEEK until the end of the season. Love that!!! Other great things: No Lauren ... Marshall was brought in ... Marshall's "Robot Dixon" line ... the new intro with ALL the outfits over the past few seasons. Go Jennifer Garner! Still pondering: where is Weiss going to fit in? I don't love Nadia ... so not too thrilled with her joining the team;

Our Happy Tivo Family

It's lucky that Steve and I are both such geeks and tivo lovers ... because we both had the same idea this year for our Christmas present. We gave each other the Humax Tivo DVD-R. And we LOVE it. It's got all the normal cool Tivo features -- plus with like 2 clicks you can burn any tv show or movie to DVD. It's all built in. You pop the DVD into any computer or TV -- and it even LOOKS like the tivo screen. Kinda nifty! And of course it eliminated the standalone DVD player from our entertainment unit -- which also means one less remote. You view regular DVD's from within the Tivo interface ... it's just another section for DVD's. And .. now that we finally have cable, you just hook the tivo up to a wireless network adapter and wala. No more phone line needed. Now the tivo's can see each other on the network ... and all is wonderful. We can watch stuff on the bedroom tivo from the living room tivo; And now TIVO has finally released Tivo-To-Go ... so we can dump old movies and tv series off onto our computer's hard drive to save space (although now that we have the tivo DVD burner ... that isn't as big of an issue on the humax as it is for the series2 tivo in the bedroom). I wonder how the copyright issues work with all this? I mean ... we can literally burn anything we can record on our tivo onto DVD. I love it! :cloud9:
