Vonage v. Bellsouth

// November 29th, 2004 // 5 Comments » // tagged:

Anyone other than Patrick using Vonage for their phone service? We're going to be switching from Bellsouth to Vonage as soon as our Comcast connection is turned on. It's an amazing service ... Voice-Over-IP phone service! Here's a comparison of our current bill ... and what our new bill will be. Bellsouth .... $60 » Complete Choice Plan - $29 (Call Waiting, Caller ID, 3-Way Calling, Call-Forwarding) » Federal Universal Service Charge - $.61 » Mileage - Zone - $1.00 » Emergency 911 Service - $1.15 » FCC Authorized Charge for Network Access - $6.50 » Equipment Maintenance Plan - $4.75 » Inside Wire Maintenance Service Plan - $5.50 » Credit for subscribing to above ($2.80) » Federal Excise Tax - $1.11 » State/Local TN Tax - $3.55 » And let's not forget our long-distance carrier. Our AT&T monthly bill is approximately $9. (We have to have a long-distance carrier in order to call Steve's family in England; We call my family on our cell phones - that have unlimited long distance calls included) » So - our monthly phone services bill is always at least $60 a month (depending on how many times we call England!). Vonage .... $22 » Basic 500 Plan - $14.99 (Voicemail Plus, Caller ID with Name, Call Waiting, Call Forwarding, 3-Way Calling, In-Network Calling, Traveling with Vonage, Area Code Selection, Call Transfer, Click-2-Call, Call Return (*69), Caller ID Block (*67), Repeat Dialing, International Call Block, Ring Lists, Call Hunt; Includes 500 anytime minutes; each minute after that is 3.9 cents a minute;) » Federal Excise Tax - $.45 » Regulatory Recovery Fee - $1.50 » International Calling Rate to England - 3 cents a minute » We're adding another feature to our vonage account called a Virtual Number. Basically - we'll have ANOTHER phone number, in my parents/grandparents/siblings area code. So they can call us for free. And that's only another $5 a month. Which brings our total Vonage phone bill up to a whopping $22. That's a $38 savings ... and you're getting even more features. (Vonage will EMAIL your voicemails to you ... you can have your phone forwarded to another number if you're going out of town ... I can call other vonage customers for free ... you can use vonage on your computer or laptop ... and much much more!) I love Vonage. If you've got broadband internet connection, you should definitely CHECK IT OUT.

Black Friday Results

Last year Steve and I did lots of Black Friday shopping - we got a 9 foot pre-lit Christmas Tree for $99, several 256MB Compact Flash cards for $10, two 256MB USB flash drives for $10. Basically - we got everything on our "Black Friday Wishlist" ... and didn't go to the stores 'til after 9AM. I don't believe in getting up at 5:30AM the day after Thanksgiving. That is just wrong. So last year - we decided to just chance it and see what we could get waiting until a decent hour to get out. And we got everything. This year ... same story, second verse. We went out at 9AM and got almost everything on our list (only thing we didn't snag was a shredder ... and we were just looking to get that because it was FREE!) This year we got several 160GB hard drives for $39 (great deal!), a few network cards for FREE, surge protectors for FREE (you can never have too many surge protectors), a few stacks of 40 DVD-RW's for $2.50, 50 slimline jewel CD/DVD cases for $1.50, and when we got to Walmart at 10:00 AM we snagged 10 DVD's for $3.88 each (and they weren't even total loser DVDs, some decent ones that we'd actually watch ...Dave, Murder at 1600, Pale Rider, etc) PromoGuy also got some good deals this year ... some from the comfort of his own home the night BEFORE Black Friday ;) A $198 5 megapixel digital camera :) Not bad ... not bad at all!

What’s so great about LiveJournal?

// November 22nd, 2004 // 7 Comments » // tagged:

Recently, several of my daily reads switched to LiveJournal. A move I have to admit has lessened how often I read them. I don't like LiveJournal - I've complained before that I hate only being allowed to leave anonymous comments (which is one of the reasons I guess I subconsciously don't visit those sites as frequently). It also bugs me that it seems that all the LiveJournals look the same ... they might have a different color scheme, and maybe even a graphic up at the top ... but they're so generic. No personality. Just ... blah. Granted, some people try to "make it their own" ... but for people like Addie and Christie who used to have such cool blog site designs -- that told you a bit about them and what they enjoyed -- to go from that to boxes everywhere is just ... grrrrrrr. But then I'm a visual person. I use an RSS reader ... but I visit my dailies actual websites pretty frequently. But everyone I know who uses LiveJournal seems to like it (obviously - or why else would they go there?). You even get annoying (we still love you though) pages like Addie's proclaming their love for this Blogger Stealing LJ. Another baffling thing is that they feel more free to post on their LiveJournal than their blog? That makes absolutely no sense to me. Both are out there in the public eye? What's the difference? And Christie even says it stresses her to BLOG but not to LJ? How can that be? I can blog this entry in MT with like ... one keystroke. I'm confused. Please. LJ people. I know you guys rarely read blogs ... but for those of you still surfing outside the LJ world ... help me out. What is the big deal about LJ? I don't get it ... I miss my daily reads ... and you just aren't the same on LJ.

Did everyone catch the ALIAS promos on TV last night? We caught them during Desperate Housewives (my newest TV addiction) ... I started jumping up and down on the couch. Watched it ... then hit the rewind on the tivo to watch it again. Yessssss!! Less than two months to go!!!

It’s finally here!

Back in July, I blogged a dirty little secret. My husband and I have been shamefully surfing the web at a shocking ... 24K. (Read more about that scandal here!) :cloud9: On Saturday, our fantasies of high speed internet access finally came to fruition. A Comcast sales rep showed up on our front porch!! Comcast is here!After doing the happy dance with him :dance: - we got down to business. We're signed up for installation sometime during the first of December. Since our house is already wired - and all we need is for them to run the cable into our attic - we get higher priority! Woohoo! Bring on the high-speed internet and digital cable. Good bye Satellite and 24K dialup! :bounce: Our Satellite TV reception has never been great - our house is in the woods, with really tall trees - and even with the satellite on the highest part of the roof, it still doesn't get good reception. So we're excited about switching our TV over the cable as well. (The only negative about switching over to cable is losing the dual-tuner tivo. I loved that!!!) We're still sorting out our tivo options though. Currently, we have the dual-tuner DirecTV tivo in the living room and a Series 2 Tivo and separate receiver in our bedroom. We're thinking of getting the new Humax DVD-R/RW Tivo to replace the DirecTV tivo. It's a bit pricey ... but the features are awesome. Maybe it will be a joint anniversary (4 years on December 2) and Christmas gift to each other. We've been on 24K dialup for almost two years now. I'm used to going down and watching tv for an hour while I upload a few files. I can't wait to be able to get work done more quickly ... surf more quickly ... do everything more quickly! (And we can finally use the tv tuner on our computer that we used back at our comcast-enabled apartment 2 years ago!)) :dance:

Rory, Rory, Rory

Enjoyed last night's Gilmore Girls Episode. But then - I enjoy almost every episode of GG, so what's new? Am I going to regret liking Logan? I knew when Rory was asking Dean about her article and he didn't have any comments that later we would see her and Logan would comment on the article. The writers not so subtly saying that Dean isn't on Rory's intellectual level (not that he ever was; but their relationship used to be based on shared interests ... but now they don't really even have that anymore). FINALLY a somewhat heated Loralei/Luke smooch. I realize it's a family show ... but we all needed that smooch. Is Logan going to turn into a mistake? I hope not ...

Saving our Democracy

Great article on Alt Text about things that need to change in our country in regards to elections. Doesn't matter who you voted for ... the article is well worth reading. I especially agree with eliminating fundraising and banning political ads - and duh - reforming "everyones favorite red-headed stepchild the Electoral College" ... Read it!

My Voting Experience

// November 2nd, 2004 // No Comments » // tagged:

I voted! How about you? I didn't early vote this year because the closest early voting location was an hour away (which is ridiculous ... and our county caught lots of flack for not having more locations available). So - this morning - I was at the polling location at 6:45 AM. At 8:30 AM, I was electronically submitting my vote in the 2004 Presidential Election. And people wonder why more people haven't voted in years past? This year's voter turnout is going to have record numbers ... and yet it seems that the voting system is just as archaic as ever. An hour and 45 minutes? I can't imagine what the waiting times are going to be like the rest of the day. I thought I was there pretty early - 6:45 AM. If you want more people to CONTINUE to vote ... in all elections - not just every four years for the President - you've got to make the process go more quickly. It's just not feasible to "go during your lunch hour" ... because if you waited until then - I'm sure it's a 3 hour + wait. Ah well ... it does feel good to vote though. I stepped out of the booth with a feeling of ... making a difference. Even if I do only count once. (Don't even get me started on how wrong the Electoral College system is.) If you haven't already voted today ... get yourself down to the nearest polling station and make a difference!!
