Cancer Update

// July 29th, 2004 // 6 Comments » // tagged:

If there can be good news when it comes to cancer, we got some. My grampy had a PET scan last Friday to determine if the cancer had spread anywhere other than the one spot in his lung. We found out yesterday (which was, incidentaly, my Grandmother's 85th birthday) that is hasn't spread. It's only the one spot in his lung. That is definitely a prayer answered. My grandmother said getting that news was one of the best birthday presents ever. Now we just have concentrate on his treatment options (he has an appointment with the oncologist today). It's going to be a rough time ahead ... but at least we are only fighting that one area. Thanks to everyone who sent such kind emails and comments - your thoughts and prayers were felt by me and my family!!!

Technology in the Home

// July 26th, 2004 // 7 Comments » // tagged:

There's an interesting article over at PVRblog with some stats on tech in the home (tv tech anyway).
4% of TV homes report owning a DVR (such as TiVo) -- a figure that has doubled in the past 6 months;
6% have an HDTV set, up 50% versus six months ago;
18% a VCR/DVD dual deck; and
5% a PC with a TV tuner.
What's your house/apartment like? Technology-wise. (Our geeky household is in the extended entry) Steve and I are pretty geeky. We have a server, two desktops, and two laptops. Networking: wireless for the laptops - wired for the desktops. (All PCS ... we're not a Mac household. It's not that I don't like Macs - I just haven't used them, don't want to have to buy all new software for that OS, and figure it's more trouble than it's worth considering we already have 5 PCS! I'm sure if I used a Mac, I'd love it. But I still wouldn't want to pay the extra $$ for legitimate copies of all the software I use on a daily basis.) The server we got a super deal on (we love gotapex.com) - and it's worth its weight in gold to us for learning purposes. Before I try anything out on the servers at work - I always try it at home first. Steve uses it all the time in getting ready for Microsoft exams - and as they're always upgrading their exams - it's great to be able to install on that server whatever OS we need to learn. We also have two big rubbermaid containers full of computer parts. Hard drives, modems, graphics cards, memory - pretty much anything salvageable from old computers. It comes in handy - it's like our own little repair/replacement store! This is the bookcase outside our office. We love computer books and magazines. Everything on those shelves is computer/tech related. Have you noticed that all the really good web design/graphics/internet magazines come from the UK (and therefore are $12+)? We have two tivos. The one in our bedroom is our original Series 2 with lifetime service (got this on the amazon marketplace ... at a greatly reduced price.) The one on the main TV is a DirecTivo with dual tuner (that we got for $49!!!!! I love a good deal!!). I love that tivo. We never ever have scheduling conflicts anymore. I :heartbeat: our tivos. One of the desktop computers has a TV tuner - but we don't really use it since we're on satellite now (so I guess we're technically part of that 5%... but not really). For cellphones - we're a Sprint family. I used to work for Sprint Government Systems in D.C. - and we got a great deal on a monthly plan - and have just kept that plan as we've changed phones. Right now I've got the Treo 600 and Steve's using the Sanyo PM-8200 and an IPAQ for his pda. Love the treo, by the way. So what's your geekiness like? [EDIT: I just typed in a big long section about our internet access situation at the house. Then I decided to just make it a separate entry. You can read it here!! ]

Internet Access Situation

// July 26th, 2004 // 6 Comments » // tagged: > >

:shocking: This will shock you: :wide-eyed: We're on dial-up internet access. And it's not even GOOD dial-up. We're doing good to get upwards of 30KBS. Yes, that's right. 30KBS. :headache: WHY are we not using DSL or cable? Well ... neither are in our neck of the woods yet (literally our neck of the woods). The closest Cable is about 5 miles away - DSL is about 4 miles away. They keep promising - it will be there soon! When we first moved out there - It was almost physically painful to get online and see our connection speed hovering at 28kbs. I mean - who thought that was even possible these days? grrrr Now I'm almost used to it. :pi: We've done a little investigating over the past year (to find out why the dialup is so horrendous and why it's taking so long to get out here!) -- and one annoying thing we discovered is that Bellsouth, our dialup provider, only has one number for our area. ONE NUMBER FOR THE ENTIRE NASHVILLE AREA!!!!!!! What is up with that??? It's not like Nashville is Podunkville, USA. A huge Bellsouth sky-scraper is 3 blocks from my work. We've called Comcast, called Bellsouth - told them who ever gets high-speed internet access in that area first is going to get the entire market. Supposedly the access is being held up by the local electric company - and all of us have been contacting them trying to get some answers. But nothing so far. We've been waiting so long - geez. I'd pay just to have 56K. When I read about Melissa getting over 3MBS at her new house - it makes me sick! :think: There's just something wrong when you can fire up your brand-new lightning fast laptop, and then go a cook dinner while you wait for your email to download. It takes forever to do anything. I find myself using my jump-drive almost every day - I'll work a little at home, and then bring the drive in to upload stuff. Blah. :help: any ideas?

Blooming Hydrangeas

// July 25th, 2004 // 2 Comments » // tagged: > >

Is this not the most beautiful hydrangea bloom you've ever seen?
There's just one tiny problem. It's the ONLY bloom on the entire plant.
I guess that's why that one is so beautiful - it's the only bloom the plant has to support!

Trackback Spam

// July 25th, 2004 // 2 Comments » // tagged: >

So it's come to this. Comment spamming is no longer a problem for MT 3.0 users (with comment moderation and typekey access). So they finally are spamming via trackback (who knows why it took them this long to figure that out ...) Arghhh ... I got my first trackback spams today. :yell: 143 of them. GRRRRRRR. Really gross stuff too. Not stuff for viagra or enlarging body parts. Nothing that tame. Nasty, icky, I wouldn't want my dog to read what was on those things. It's just a matter of a few clicks to delete them all - but I don't want them there in the first place. (Blacklist for MT 3.0 needs to be released! Please!!!) I wish the trackbacks were set up like the comments - where they were at least held for approval (that way they never show up on the site). I'm adding all the first two subsets of the IP addresses to my IP-Deny manager on my webserver ... but that isn't a real solution because these people are spoofing ip addresses anyway. Banning one IP just means they'll use another one. But banning the first two subsets does seem to slow them down a bit. What is the point, people? Do they think we're going to leave those yucky links on our site? Do they think anyone who reads our blogs are going to click on those links and therefore bring them in some income? Move along, people. Get. A. Life.

Cancer Sucks, Part 3

// July 21st, 2004 // 4 Comments » // tagged:

My mom called me last night. It's definitely cancer. It's bad. The doctors are very discouraged. We won't know until tomorrow whether it's small-cell or non-small-cell lung cancer. He has a PET scan on Friday that will tell us if it's spread anywhere else other than his right lung. My brother called me last night after he had talked to my mom. Hearing my older brother cry over the phone breaks my heart. We talked for a while - and that was good for both of us I think. Neither of us wanted to upset my mother any further, so I think crying to each other helped get that out. We are extraordinarily close to our grandparents - we see them frequently, talk to them several times a week - and though we realize we're lucky to still have them, we still can't believe that one of them is so sick. He doesn't look sick. He was putting a new mailbox in at their house just two days ago. He played with MacGyver two weeks ago at my parents. We just took for granted that they were so healthy. But then ... my grandmother on my dad's side stopped cancer treatments a year ago (for breast cancer) - and she's still around, doing ok. So you never know what can happen. But it's devastating news. Even though they are old ... it doesn't lessen how important they are in your lives or what a void they would leave if they weren't around. My pastor says to just take one day at a time. Tomorrow we'll know more than we know today. Next week we'll know even more. Take the news as it comes and try to be positive. But again ... Cancer sucks.

Out of my jurisdiction

// July 19th, 2004 // 1 Comment » // tagged:

Saturday night, we were driving on the interstate and came up behind a weaving tractor trailer. He was all over the road - we pulled back and cringed every time he swerved and almost hit other vehicles. After about 5 minutes of this, we called the police so that hopefully someone could come out and pull this guy over before he killed someone. We got them on the phone, told them we had a possibly drunk and/or asleep tractor trailer driver on the road. However, evidently while I was on the phone with them, we crossed the county line, because when the officer asked where we were on the interstate, he quickly responded that it wasn't his jurisdiction. Then he gave me a 7 digit phone number to call and then hung up on me. I'm sorry ... but that just flew all over me. It's not like we were in a different state or something - we were in the next county. Would it have been that hard for him to (a) transfer me to that number or even better (b) call that number himself and avoid the introductions and technical stuff that you always have to give out when calling the police. But no. He gives me a phone number to call and hangs up on me. Thankfully Steve was with me, and could write down the number to call. If I'd been by myself - there's no way I could have written down or remembered the number to call. And anyway - isn't this what I'm paying taxes for? It's good to know our police department is so concerned about drunk/hazardous driving! Grrrrrrrrrr.
