Florida here we come!

// April 29th, 2004 // No Comments » // tagged:

Tomorrow morning Steve and I will be on a plane on our way to Florida for four days of fun in the sun! We both needed to get away from work (at our jobs and at the house) - and just relax. I'm hoping for at least one day where we do nothing but sit on the beach and read. That would be a perfect day (even more perfect would be the miracle of me getting a tan at the same time.) As it is, I'll have on my 45 SPF sunscreen, a widebrimmed hat, and hope for the best! I think Addie's convinced me to try the Mystic Tan - but I didn't have time to go before our trip. Maybe one day next week I'll try it out, and hope I don't come out looking like Ross on Friends. We got really great deals on our travel arrangements for this trip -- we're both flying roundtrip for $180. That's $90 a person roundtrip airfare, direct flight. Not a bad deal! And we're staying in a Hilton Garden Inn (I love those hotels... we always try to stay in those when we're on a trip because the room is guaranteed to be nice, internet access, pools, jacuzzis, breakfast included -- oh and Steve gets great rates from all the traveling he has done for work) -- so we got this great hotel for $59 a night. Not bad. I love a cheap, but great, holiday (thats what they call vacations in England!) (I've redesigned my Silver Strawberry website .... it looks much cleaner now. I was so tired of the black and red. There's much work still to be done -- I'm still working on individual pages for each client -- but I'm almost halfway there!)

It can only get better, right?

Steve and I saw someone killed in a wreck this morning. We were in the eastbound lane heading downtown, and right in the middle of one of the huge construction sections on I-40. It's always nasty driving through there, more so in the westbound lanes - they're working on three overpasses right now - and this morning was no different. We had just passed under White Bridge Rd and a white truck just ran underneath a tractor trailer. The back corner of the tractor trailer was basically sitting in the back of the truck. I don't know how many people were in the truck, or what precipitated the wreck - but I know there is no way anyone survived. You see it, but you don't really see it .... I've seen death before - I've seen mangled bodies. I worked in surgery for several years - but I always saw the bodies, saw the severly injured people, AFTER the wrecks, after the shootings, after the stabbings. It's different to see them in a semi-controlled environment of a hospital. It's still tragic, it's still bloody and messy, but you see them there, and you realize they are there so that you can help them. They've made it that far - you're going to help them make it through. But this morning, I saw what happened before they got there. And I know, the people in that truck won't need help from a hospital. They were dead as soon as their windshield broke. A few months ago, a couple & young son from our church were driving home after the holidays. A tractor trailer drove through a stop sign and hit a utility pole. The pole hit this couples car, killed the husband and son instantly. The mother survived. She survived to bury her son and husband. An amazing person, this woman. She's still living here, in the same house. She truly is a survivor. Therapy, depression, anger -- thats going to be her life for a while though. This is what I was thinking about this morning as Steve drove me on into work. I was just sitting in the car wondering what how many people's lives will be changed instantly with the phone call that will be coming any time now. Telling them their husband, mother, father, brother -- whoever they were -- has just been killed. What a way to start a morning. Now I remember one of the reasons I was always so churned up when I worked in healthcare. I don't seem to have that "turn off" button.

Abebooks obsession

// April 20th, 2004 // No Comments » // tagged: >

Over the past few months, I've bought quite a few books via the Amazon Marketplace -- and noticed that many times the books were coming from the same seller - Abebooks. I decided to try ordering books directly through them. Now I'm obsessed. They have almost everything I'm looking for, and almost all of them for $1.00. I'm not picky about getting hardbacks, or books with no creases, or the latest editions. $1.00, folks. Basically Abebooks is kinda like the amazon marketplace -- in that it sells books for thousands of book stores all over the place. So, if you really want to save money on shipping, you just search particular sellers inventory. Today I got 11 books for $20.19. Thats Basically $1 a book, $1 shipping. Pretty good deal. I'm getting really good at finding all the books I want from one seller too -- that really helps keep the shipping charges down. Are you a book-lover? You should definitely try out abebooks (they're also great for hard to find books. I was able to buy several books that aren't in print anymore!)

Dr. Seuss explains computer crashes

// April 19th, 2004 // No Comments » // tagged:

This is too cute! Read it aloud to yourself to get the full effect ;) "If a packet hits a pocket on a socket on a port, and the bus is interrupted at a very last resort, and the access of the memory makes your floppy disk abort, then the socket packet pocket has an error to report. If your cursor finds a menu item followed by a dash, and the double-clicking icon puts your window in the trash, and your data is corrupted cause the index doesn't hash, then your situation's hopeless and your system's gonna crash! If the label on the cable on the table at your house, says the network is connected to the button on your mouse, but your packets want to tunnel to another protocol, that's repeatedly rejected by the printer down the hall, and your screen is all distorted by the side effects of gauss, so your icons in the window are as wavy as a souse; then you may as well reboot and go out with a bang, 'cuz sure as I'm a poet, the sucker's gonna hang! When the copy of your floppy's getting sloppy in the disk, and the macro code instructions cause unnecessary risk, then you'll have to flash the memory and you'll want to RAM your ROM then quickly turn off the computer and be sure to tell your Mum!"

I had a package delivered today

// April 16th, 2004 // 2 Comments » // tagged: > >

I arrived at work today, and found a box on my desk delivered by UPS. I have the best husband ever. :heartbeat: Look what he got me:
It's Galaxy Chocolate. The. Yummiest. Chocolate. In. The. World. He had them shipped from England. Sigh. It's a wonderful thing when your husband knows exactly what will put a smile on your face. :cloud9: (On an unrelated note ... I took this picture with my phone! Pretty good quality, isn't it? I love everything about my Treo 600! I've had it for about 2 months now and I have to say its the best pda/phone/camera/everything I've ever used or seen. It basically does everything you'd ever need. :thumbsup: I especially love that I got $400 off in rebates!!)

Homeless Frustration

// April 14th, 2004 // No Comments » // tagged: >

I grew up in a smallish town ... where I can't remember ever seeing a homeless person. Seriously. Sure, there were poor families, but no one on the side of the streets sleeping or begging for money. When Steve and I were married, we lived in D.C. for almost a year and I had a crash course in living in a big city, and all that that entails. Yes, you have the many cultural experiences available and employment opportunities that never would have been possible in a small town, but you also have the poverty situation. It was an eye-opener, but we weren't regularly faced with the homeless population. It was there, we saw them ... maybe we gave them a McDonalds Value Meal once in a while ... but that was it. Now, as many of you know, I work in a downtown Nashville church. And I do mean downtown -- we're on the corner of 7th and Broadway. I remember when I first came here, I couldn't believe that all the doors to the church buildings were always locked and we had video cameras and intercom systems on certain doors to allow deliveries and church members to enter the building. (On Sundays and Wednesdays, we have a security guard stationed at the doors to allow members to come and go without having to use the intercom.) At first, I didn't really understand the need for such security - but after only a few weeks it became clear. I estimate between 40 - 50 homeless and/or drunk/ drugged out people (and thats probably on the low side) come to our doors every day. I can't even estimate the phone calls we receive every day. We even have a specific voicemail box set up so that when people call in asking for assistance with rent, utilities, food, etc -- they can leave their information and someone in our ministry gets back to them. It's a constant barrage ... and for every 1 person that comes to us for help and legitimately needs help, there are 10 drunks/druggies that show up. We have a childcare in our building ... and that alone justifies having our doors locked 24-7. Can you imagine what could happen if just one drugged out person got near any of the children? I don't even want to think about it! But it's frustrating. There are procedures for how to handle these situations .... but sometimes it is very hard to turn people away. Even though most of them time we are giving them somewhere to go -- the Nashville Rescue Mission , Travelers Aid (they help people with bus tickets, many people just want to get home to their families), Barnabas House (a halfway house), or one of the multitude of support centers. We have a clothing closet that we open on Wednesday nights for people to come and find coats, shoes, regular clothes. It's our policy to never give out money, and while we will pay bills - it's always done directly through the utility company. We never give money straight to the people. A wonderful ministry that downtown Nashville churches are involved in is called Room in the Inn. It's a volunteer nonprofit shelter program for the homeless, funded entirely by donations. Over 150 churches all over the city volunteer their facilities for one night a week. On any given night of the week, there are atleast 15 churches available. Our church has Sunday nights. Each week a different group of church members is in charge of Room in the Inn. We provide dinner that night, a place to sleep, showers, clothes washing, and a healthy breakfast the next morning. You think you'll be prepared for what you will see ... especially having worked here and having seen the masses of people coming to our doors every single day. But it doesn't prepare you for seeing a young woman with her 3 children. Homeless. And her youngest child isn't yet 6 months old. How does this happen to someone? What circumstances in life caused a this young family to be in such a heartbreaking situation? Is there anything we can do to help them get themselves up and out and into a better life? We can try -- but in the end -- it is up to them. They have to want it and be willing to do what it takes to get there. It's so sad when you see the homeless people that seem resigned to their station in life. They aren't even trying to change their lives. I cannot imagine ever getting to the point that I thought it would be ok to not have a home. How do they get to the point where it doesn't matter anymore?

RSS Feed Preferences

// April 6th, 2004 // 4 Comments » // tagged:

Do you use a newsreader to read your favorite blogs? Which one? Do you prefer entire entries being included in the RSS feed, or just excerpts? I've made a few changes on the site over the past week. The one I'm most excited about is the aggregation of all of the different blogs I have set up. Now my favorite links, movie & book reviews, odds&ends links, and my regular blog entries are all aggregated together on my index page. So no matter which blog I post a new entry in ... they all get their "time in the spotlight" on the front page. And they all can have their own design. (which is what I really wanted ... I didnt want it to just list all my entries in the same format. Especially since I use different fields for different things in all the blogs). All it took was a few MT plugins (SQL and Compare) and a little coding frenzy -- and wala aggregated index page! And I've moved most of my previous book and movie reviews into their own blog ... complete with the berrylicious rating system. To see all the reviews I've moved over to date ... visit the Reviews Page :)
