Addicted to MT Forums

// August 27th, 2003 // 1 Comment » // tagged:

I'm getting addicted to surfing the MT forums. It's an every day visit now. I like being able to answer questions, even though for the most part I can only answer the easier questions -- I leave the complicated stuff to the long-time plugin-creating wonder MT users who have like 7000 posts. Whew! I can handle basic template q's and many of the tips and tricks questions. I'm out of my league in the plugins forum though .... while I may have installed loads of plugins, I'm not comfortable giving advice on how to hack them. Again, I'll leave that for the old-timers! It's a great resource for MT users -- Not only do you get answers posted to questions, but loads of links to tutorials and ideas for how you can personalize MT to do everything you ever dreamed of for your website. Gotta love it! Check out Steve's football (soccer) website (he's run this site for years and years ... he gets several hundred hits a day, it's pretty popular with the fans!), we've recently converted the news, home articles, season page and a little side section into MT. It's much easier for him to maintain -- he can still post to MT at work (he can't FTP, IM or use personal email -- they've got really strict network firewalls and lockdowns in place), so he can do some things during the day if he needs to. The season page is pretty nifty -- because you can post in the future, so he's got all the fixtures for the season in MT, and it automatically does the nice little calendar and so if someone wants to know who is playing who in December, they can just click on the date they're interested in and see the fixtures for that date. I love future posting. Anyway -- converting just a few pages into MT has simplified the maintenance of the page tremendously. Now it's just a matter of a few clicks to update everything. I love automated anything.

Star Wars Kid

Did you hear about this kid? :evillaugh: Star Wars Kid. This 15 year old was goofing off at a school video studio and recorded himself fighting a mock battle with a golf ball retriever lightsaber. His friends found the video and uploaded it-- and it's now caused an internet frenzy. Click here for the website -- and be sure to check out the over SEVENTY clone videos people have done. Version 2 is hilarious!!! Oh -- and have your sound on ;)

I’ll have a new password for $1000, Alex.

:fridayfive: 1. When was the last time you laughed? ah about 2 seconds ago 2. Who was the last person you had an argument with? a guy at work who didn't think changing your password every 2-3 months was important to network security :banghead: 3. Who was the last person you emailed? my brother, about the house they are buying 4. When was the last time you bathed? this morning, great shower! 5. What was the last thing you ate? a pack of peanut butter crackers and a diet coke What a week. I've been slammed all week long with work. In addition to my normal website work (big project due on deadline next week , and I'm still missing 4 articles from different contributors :crazy:), I've had two new machines to add to the network here - which should have been a piece of cake, except someone ordered them with XP home instead of XP Pro, so I had to redo the entire disk with XP and then reinstall all the drivers and blah blah blah. We're also busy trying to keep everything up to date what with all the viruses and worms out there being on the rise recently. Do these hackers not have anything better to do? Couldn't they be working on something more productive? Like code to help the fight for cancer or something? :yell: I don't know -- anything better than working so hard on something just to cause chaos? What is the point? Oh well. Watched Gangs of New York last night. Not sure what all the fuss was about. THat was a 1 1/2 hour movie stretched into a 3 hour movie. It was an ok movie -- but I'm glad I didn't waste my money and see it on the big screen. Thank goodness for netflix!

A Mr. Darcy and Bo Diddley Weekend

// August 18th, 2003 // 2 Comments » // tagged:

It was a weekend for movies. I was flipping through the channels Friday night and what should I see on but Sense and Sensibility. Another Jane Austen classic. I watched it and then, guess what was on A&E? Your favorite and mine, Mr. Darcy in Pride and Prejudice. I figured I might as well pop in my DVD set of P&P instead of sitting through the tv version -- so I watched my favorite scenes from P&P, including of course the first proposal, the meeting at the lake, her at the piano with Georgianna, and the "trifle with my affections" scene at the very end. :heartbeat: Again I must reiterate how every woman needs a Mr. Darcy. Saturday night we went to a concert out at the Amsouth Amphitheatre. Tom Petty & and the Heartbreakers -- with Bo Diddley opening. I have to say I LOVED Bo Diddley ... he was great and so funny. His band ended up getting stuck in New York and so the Heartbreakers played for him -- they were having a great time (I'm sure they love getting to play something different and with someone who has been in the business forever!) THe drummer just couldn't stop smiling :bounce:, especially when BD came up and did an impromptu drum duet (or whatever you'd call it!) with him. He ended his set by rapping -- which was just great and had the audience on their feet screaming because he's like 80 years old and was still very hip and cool. The TP and the HB come on and did a great show -- with all the great hits, FreeBird, American Girl , and a new song called Melinda in which their piano player is the starring role -- awesome piano spotlight. Yesterday we went to the movies to see the newest American Pie, American Wedding. I enjoyed the first two movies, and mainly wanted to see this one because BTVS's Alyson Hannigan was the lovely bride. I don't think this film was nearly as funny as the first one -- but it was entertainment for an afternoon.

Synchronized Swimming and Cupid’s Robert A.

It's Friday! Finally! What a long week this has been .... I thought the weekend would never get here. We don't have any plans other than a Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers concert tomorrow night. It's being held at an outdoor amphitheatre and although we have reserved seats I'm still hoping for no rain. We've had rain every day this week, and even with seats its just going to make the whole thing yucky if its raining. Our summer has been strange here. I don't think we've had more than 3 days of successive nice weather. We've had really bad rain and thunderstorms at least twice a week almost all summer. Finding time to mow the lawn is difficult because the grass seems to always be wet -- so when we have two days in a row with no rain, we're outside trying to get all this stuff done that we can't do in the rain. Ugh. I remember when we moved here almost three years ago (three years! wow! time flies!) -- I wondered why I had never heard that Nashville gets a lot of rain. Whew. At least we all have green lawns and lush plants :) Did you read about Ted Williams body being cryogenically preserved? I don't know if technology might eventually figure out how to restore life to someone who has died and been frozen. But I do think there is a better chance of doing it if his HEAD is still ATTACHED. How is that supposed to work? That means they've got to figure out how to bring him back to life AND reattach his head and solve the whole spinal cord severed problem. Not likely. How could you let yourself get to this state? I can't imagine. Was I the only girl growing up who every time I got in a swimming pool would do handstands and try to do other things .... and think it would be kinda neat to do synchronized swimming? And this is all I have to say about this week's Cupid. Robert. Huh????? Hank. Awwww!!!!!!

Those shoes were evil ….

// August 10th, 2003 // 5 Comments » // tagged:

I have a pretty black and blue foot now! I'm down in Cleveland at my parents house this weekend for Sarah's (my niece) dedication at church this morning. Whenever I'm down here, I always like to go to this great shoe place -- Becky's. So yesterday afternoon, we stopped in and I saw this fantastic pair of slide heels. I slipped my right foot into them and my foot immediately twisted and I heard a 'pop' sound. My mom and Steve were a few aisles over but heard me gasp in pain :weep: -- so Steve came over and helped me over to a chair. Within about one minute, the side of my foot had swelled up so much I couldn't get my shoe back on. It just popped out and kept on going! So that nixed the rest of the shopping trip, we headed back to the parents house and I kept my foot up and on ice for the rest of the night. It's now a pretty blue color with a black tinge along the edge -- I'm sure by tomorrow it will be a real beauty! :crazy: Steve said it must have been a sign ... no more shoe shopping for a while :cry:

Robert is still there??

How on earth did anyone get eliminated before total loser Robert A? :whoa: Unbelievable. That Arnold Schwartzenegger wannabe is just a pumped up loser with nothing more than air between his ears ... :censor: Although it makes you wonder what was Lisa doing keeping him on the show anyway? Why did she keep him in the top ten? Maybe she thought he would easily be eliminated by America -- so she didn't waste any of her eliminations?? I don't know. I can't honestly believe she thought she could be attracted to him intellectually (or otherwise really). Oh well - hopefully he'll be gone next week and we can just enjoy watching Hank and Lisa's dates. FYI, This is cupid talk ... for those of you wondering what I'm going on about. And Hank is still a cutie pie! :cloud9:

it’s always too early to wake up

// August 5th, 2003 // 1 Comment » // tagged: >

We're putting shelves in an alcove in our kitchen. Not quite sure what the previous homeowners did with that space -- it's about 3 feet wide, 7 feet tall and 1.5 feet deep. To us, it was wasted space because we don't have any furniture that would fit that space. So we're putting shelves in there (I can display vases, some of my teapots and miscellaneous kitchen stuff) -- you can never have too many built in bookshelves in a house. We already have 4. We have lots of books. LOTS. :book: This will make five built-ins (and then we have my two favorite free-standing ones they're square, with 9 square spaces for books -- they're in our bedroom and one of the guest bedrooms upstairs ... I have my not-as-intellectual novels in those bookcases :uhh: - aka romance rip the bodice books ;) ). So tonight we're cutting some molding ... and now after only installing one shelf (4 more to go) I can say how important it is to measure at least twice, and cut once. Otherwise you end up sanding off that extra 1/8 of an inch because it's almost impossible to do another cut without making it too short. :headache: So after finally getting the molding and everything correct for the first shelf, we're calling it quits for this evening. Tomorrow night is going to be better. We've got one under our belt -- and tomorrow night we'll be whipping those shelves up there like there's no tomorrow. :fridayfive: Only a few days late! 1. What time do you wake up on weekday mornings? 6:15 AM 2. Do you sleep in on the weekends? How late? Yes! Usually wake up around 8:45 or 9:00 AM 3. Aside from waking up, what is the first thing you do in the morning? Shower 4. How long does it take to get ready for your day? 20-30 minutes. 5. When possible, what is your favorite place to go for breakfast? Pancake Pantry

Cupid’s Hank

// August 4th, 2003 // 7 Comments » // tagged:

Is Hank, on Cupid, not the cutest? He's just adorable and so far, the only one who has definite chemistry with Lisa -- their date was the best! He was focused on her and they just talked and had a good time, and actually got to know each other. And then at the end, when they didn't kiss, but not kissing made it even more obvious how much they liked each other. :heartbeat: Sweet. And then during the actual show, when they went over his date and he was even cuter. Lisa's "smitten" with him too. I'm sure most of America is ... what a cutie :wacko:

MT Sideblog Tutorials

// August 3rd, 2003 // 26 Comments » // tagged: >

!! This tutorial has not been updated since movable type version 2. It is most likely obsolete !!

I had been toying with the idea of putting my currently list on my main index page, but I wanted it to be super easy to update and linkable. So I did it with MT. The first version was pretty good -- it listed all my different categories (reading, watching, listening to etc.) and then the date and the newest thing I'd been reading, watching, listening to, etc. It linked to a website for that particular listing. So if I was reading Harry Potter, it linked to the Warner Bros Harry Potter Site. If I was listening to Collective Soul, it linked to their official site. It's basically almost exactly what I've got up right now on my blog ... except then it didn't gather and show the Amazon info.

If that's what you want to do ... use the Sideblog Without Amazon tutorial. My sideblog had only been up a few days when I noticed the winamp playlist over on kadyellebee.com. When you were hovering over one of the album titles, it would show the album cover, title, the latest amazon price and give you a link for buying it. I thought that was wicked cool! I don't use winamp, but I thought it would be cool to use it for everything on my currently list. Books, movies, tv shows, etc. Amazon has a listing for everything basically -- and thus the fun began. It took several days and lots of frustrating posting on the MT Support Forums, and lots of great help from the posters there, but eventually I got the code to work and I'm estatic with the results. This version of my sideblog is currently live on my site -- When you hover over anything on my currently list, it's going to pop up with info from Amazon about that topic. If that's what you want to do ... use the Sideblog With Amazon tutorial. You want to pull your playlist from Winamp and have Amazon info pop up? Well you're in the wrong place for that! While kadyellebee's tutorial on how to set this up was the inspiration for how I set up the Amazon links, I don't use winamp, don't want to, and there's no point writing another tutorial on something that's already been done expertly by Kristine herself!! Check out her tutorial here!

Sideblog Without Amazon

The following MUST be installed in order for this to work
(The plugins and javascript come with installation instructions):

Movable Type, version 2.5 or higher
Javascript: OverLIB

Download this zip file (Template Configurations).

1. Create a new weblog in MT. Call it Sideblog (or whatever you like!)

2. Decide if you want to have an image above each category or not. This will determine which template file you will use! If you want an image, open sideblog1.html. If you don't want an image, open sideblog2.html.

3. When you have the appropriate template open, change the paths for the overlib.js script and, if you're using the images template, for your images. Use the full path (i.e. http://www.yourdomain.com/blah blah). For now, don't change anything else. We want to make sure everything works before you start customizing it specifically for your site!

4. Replace the Main Index Template with the file you just altered (I prefer linking to templates, but do as you like!)!

5. Create your categories (i.e. Reading, Listening To, Watching, Buying)

6. If you aren't using images, skip to step 8. If you ARE using the template with images, create an image for each category, and save it as the same exact name as the category in the directory that you specified in step 4. (For Reading, save the image as reading.jpg; For Listening To, save the image as ListeningTo.jpg, etc.)

7. Rebuild!

8. Now you'll want to blog a few new entries -- to test and make sure everything is working properly.

How to blog a new entry:

Entry Title: You put the title of whatever you're watching or listening to here. (i.e. No Doubt, Friends, The Sound and the Fury, etc!)

Entry Body: What you want to display as alt text when you hover over the text. (i.e. - if I was listening to No Doubt, I would put -- "Gwen Stefani Rocks!!!" in the entry body!)

Entry Excerpt: The URL you want the text to link to. (i.e. for No Doubt, I'd put http://www.nodoubt.com in excerpt section!)

9. See your new sideblog at http://www.yourdomain.com/whatever you called your sideblog/.

10. Now if you want to include this blog onto one of your other pages, just use an include statement wherever it is that you want it to display:

[OR you can use the MTOtherBlog plugin! ]

Sideblog WITH Amazon

The following MUST be installed in order for this to work
(The plugins and javascript come with installation instructions):

Movable Type, version 2.5 or highe
Javascript: OverLIB
MT Plugin: MTAmazon (you'll also need to sign up for an Developers Token/Associates ID; it's free though!)
MT Plugin: MTProcess Tags
MT Plugin: MTTag Invoke (this plugin is still in beta, but its the only way to get the MTAmazon to work in this way! It worked first-try for me and totally solved the problem of placing a MT tag inside another MT tag inside a Javascript! Woohoo!)
PHP enabled server (to include the sideblog on your main page)

Download this zip file (Template Configurations).

1. Create a new weblog in MT. Call it Sideblog (or whatever you like!)

2. Decide if you want to have an image above each category or not. This will determine which template file you will use! If you want an image, open sideblogamazon1.html. If you don't want an image, open sideblogamazon2.html.

3. When you have the appropriate template open, change the paths for the overlib.js script and, if you're using the images template, for your images. Use the full path (i.e. http://www.yourdomain.com/blah blah). For now, don't change anything else. We want to make sure everything works before you start customizing it specifically for your site!!

4. Now take the associate id you got from Amazon, and in the template replace associateid="silverberry20" with YOUR id. (Or if you don't want to bother getting a id, you can leave mine there!).

5. Replace the Main Index Template with the file you just altered (I prefer linking to templates, but do as you like!)!

6. Create your categories (i.e. Reading, Listening To, Watching, Buying)

8. Rebuild!

9. Now you'll want to blog a few new entries -- to test and make sure everything is working properly.

How to blog a new entry:

Entry Title: You put the title of whatever you're watching or listening to here. (i.e. No Doubt, Friends, The Sound and the Fury, etc!)

Entry Body: The ASIN of the album, book, etc. If I'm linking a non ITEM, I'll usually link to something relating to it. If I'm watching the Letterman show, I'll put the ASIN of a book that he has written on his Top Ten Lists. There's always something you can link to! Just put the number here! Be sure there are absolutely NO spaces here - if you copy and paste from Amazon, it puts a space after the ASIN -- backspace to get rid of that. If there are spaces before or after the ASIN, it will NOT pull the amazon info!!

Entry Excerpt: The URL you want the physical text to link to. (i.e. for No Doubt, I'd put http://www.nodoubt.com). They'll be able to click on the link from the popup Amazon window, but if its Letterman, or someone you're plugging, or a TV show, you might want to link to an official site or something.

10. See your new sideblog at http://www.yourdomain.com/whatever you called your sideblog/.

11. Now if you want to include this blog onto one of your other pages, just use an include statement wherever it is that you want it to display:

[OR you can use the MTOtherBlog plugin! ]
